Review of Kitchen Chaos to Culinary Bliss
Title: Kitchen Chaos to Culinary Bliss: Organise and Enjoy Cooking
Author: Mary Lummerding
Sometimes, we need to reset and examine how aspects of our lives are organised. This book focuses on arguably the most essential element: the kitchen. It tends to be chaotic and disorganised, especially in a busy family. Too many of us rely on microwave meals, fast food, and quick, starchy snacks with no nutritional value. Chef Mary Lummerding's advice is brought to us by easy-to-read methods, which seem, at first, obvious and almost too simple, but they are vital for adequate eating habits. They help save money and create a fun and satisfying way to cook: food for the soul. I like the sentence: 'Cooking provides the neurological benefits of sequencing, decision-making, calculating and following instructions'. This explains that food preparation is good for every aspect of our psyche.
Chef Mary has been in the food and cooking business for decades and has training and experience in all aspects of catering.
She writes that there are many 'tools of the trade' in the catering world, such as good knives, pots and pans, and spatulas, along with the basics of food, such as spices and herbs. She helps to determine what will be the most useful, and I find it strangely engrossing.
Her tone is chatty, and her enthusiasm is palpable. I took one of her tips and kept a container close by to put the scraps into. This saved on repeated trips to the compost or bin and kept the area clean.
Although I enjoyed her book, I finished it quickly. It wasn't deep or provocative, and I have trouble awarding it a full five stars because of this. Although it was almost perfectly edited, I will give it four stars out of five. It is a handy book, and the recipes were good. It had a good, old-fashioned feel to it.
