First Survivor by Mark Unger is indeed engrossing, motivating, and poignant, and it is the true account of a family that had a child who suffered from childhood cancer. The object of the book is Unger’s son named Louis, who was diagnosed with a particularly severe case of brain cancer in infancy. Thus, the major theme of the book is: hope, perseverance, and victory.

While narrating the story in the book, Unger gives an account of how the diagnosis affected the family emotionally and physically and the rigorous treatments and several medical complications the family went through. However, First Survivor is not only the drama of the fight but also the victory of the spirit, love, and determination.

This is a very moving story, which demonstrates how with the right medical treatments, an indefatigable medical staff, and determination, they were able to enable Louis to become a cancer survivor. The book also touches on the topic of state-of-the-art in cancer therapy as well as patient support, organizations', and fundraising for childhood cancer research.

In the book, Mark Unger gives viewers the truth about everything families go through when a member has a serious disease but still gives hope that everything will be okay. The story as a whole helps the reader to recall the outstanding power that is inside a person in order to overcome the harshest tests of life and never leave and always fight for one’s life.

I liked this book because it showcased what a family can achieve when they work together as a unit. Nothing beats the love a family has for themselves. It is one of the most beautiful things to ever exist. I found nothing to dislike about the book. It was well edited, and I found no errors. I rate this book five out of five stars. I recommend this book to cancer patients and their families. It will help keep them strong for the tough battles ahead.
