Why do some retire to a life of bliss, while others suffer after retirement? What is the differentiating factor between those who enjoy and those who suffer retirement? The single answer borders on planning. In this book, the author combines solutions from both the left and right sides of the brain and gives a detailed explanation of how to reconfigure our lives to enjoy retirement.

I have been in the industry for some time, and I feel it is time for me to give a rethink on how to end my service time. With this book handy, I hope it will equip me to plan to succeed after retirement. When I opened this book, I discovered Alan wrote it to close the gap between reality and tradition. With the tradition being that every worker is bound to retire and the reality being that not all workers will retire well.

The book discussed some terms that Alan considers the component parts of reconfiguration. The components discussed here are insurance, social security, health plans, the kind of investment choices we should consider making, 401k and IRA, medicare and medicaid, etc. In addition to the excellent editing, one other feature of this book that I found fascinating was the jokes that punctuated the chapters, thus bringing humor to the serious discourse. I really did laugh out loud when I came across some of them.

This book made some shocking revelations that will make the average reader start thinking about putting plans in place in order to retire well. This book stated that the origin of life insurance started with the Romans in what is called “burial clubs.” Alan discussed the different types, components, benefits, and what to check before signing up for an insurance plan.

The best topic for me in this book was the chapter on Medicare and Medicaid. It is no longer debatable that old age comes with lots of health challenges. One's ability to live longer to an extent depends on the quality of medical care they are receiving. E. Alan Fleischauer's Reconfigurement gets a rating of five out of five stars from me because I have no drawbacks against it and would recommend it to anyone serious with the business of retiring well.
