“First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough” by Mark Unger is a book that details the journey of a young boy who is faced with a dire situation of hopelessness. Will he succeed? Will he become gold as he passes through the furnace? Will he quit in obscurity and pain? What is his source of hope and faith? What did he find through the challenges? Readers will learn about life-shaping characters from the book.

Mark starts the story by introducing the reader to Louis Unger, the son of Mark Unger and Mary Unger. One day, Mary noticed some abnormal behavior in her son. He rarely plays and feels pain easily, she also discovered a change in his walking step. She immediately took him to a pediatrician for a medical check. At the initial point of the check, everything seems alright. Later, the couple was sent to see a medical doctor at the Yale School of Medicine. This journey to Yale opened a long chronicle of the uncertainties in the book, the obstacles and surmounting strategies, the medical complications and the survival manual, and other happenings. Truly, the book is a product of faith and resilience.

I cherish the narrative spirit in the book, it evokes faith, hope, resilience, success, and love. The parents faced the greatest fight of their lives; they had to face it, defy every odd, keep the faith always, and keep pushing. The descriptive nature of the book is charming and captivating. The author kept every detail in his daily writings.

I like the educational aspect of the book; it teaches us that there is something that can overcome every obstacle and challenge in life. Readers will find it in the book. The love and harmony between the family and Louis is a positive aspect of the book. It radiates throughout the book. The editing is flawless.

I could not dislike any aspect of the book. The numerous terminologies should have been the negative aspect of the book, but the explanations in the book made me appreciate them. It adds to the credibility of the story. I rate the book “First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough” by Mark Unger 5 out of 5 stars. The reasons for the rating are above. I recommend it to families. Medical practitioners will appreciate the book.
