Review of Homeless: Against all Odds
[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Homeless: Against all Odds" by Dr. Alfonso Brown.]
Homeless: Against all Odds, written by Dr. Alfonso Brown, is a beautiful memoir detailing the author's trials and how, in spite of being homeless for a long period, he managed to acquire a doctoral degree. The writer describes his upbringing, his time spent as a homeless man, and all the challenges he endured. It's a very moving and uplifting tale. The author was raised in a household where the father was nearly seventeen and the mother had just turned fourteen. Being a black guy growing up in such circumstances, as depicted in this book, wasn't easy, but the author's perseverance and spirit allowed him to become the person he is today.
The author describes how the Great Recession, a severe economic downturn that began in 2007 and continued for many years, caused him to become homeless. The author had several challenging obstacles to overcome in the beginning, such as sleeping in the car and renting inexpensive office space. I have been greatly inspired by the author's journey to success; thus, I really enjoyed reading about it. The obstacles the author faced on her path to a doctorate are discussed in the book. After reading this book, I have thought to myself that anything is achievable if you set your mind to it and work hard.
As I mentioned before, I enjoyed reading this book because it was easy to understand and had a well-structured vocabulary. I didn't find any errors while reading this book. It was properly and thoroughly edited; kudos to the editors. Additionally, it may be appropriate for younger audiences due to its lack of mild profanity. I give this book five out of five stars since it is well-structured, concise, and understandable. I have no complaints about it. If you know someone who is going through a difficult period, or if you are going through a difficult time yourself, I highly recommend this book to you both.

There's no guarantee what life throws at us. For one, it could be a golden spoon. Yet for another, it could be a poverty-stricken background. However, what we eventually become is a function what we do with what life throws at us. I can relate with Dr. Alfonso's story. I also believe that his story will encourage many people to see the positive side of life, regardless of what life presents.
