Review of Developing Resilience
Developing Resilience by Penny Christian Knight is a memoir that chronicles the life of the author growing up in the 1930s to 1950s and experiencing sexual abuse at an early age. The book showed how her experiences in the past shaped the outcomes of her present life and how it distorted her views about intimacy and relationships. As a former psychotherapist herself, the author meticulously comments and interprets the events in her life as they occurred, giving insights not only to the facts but also to her inward reflections.
This autobiographical book explores a sensitive subject. However, I find the story an exploration of a woman's journey to healing and recovery from the traumatic incidents that have happened to her in the past. What I find the most compelling is how the author does not only tell the story as it happens, but she also ensures she reflects on them deeply, especially now that she has the insights of an older and more mature woman in contrast to her younger self, who didn't know any better. I appreciate how the narration of these events is layered within their historical and social contexts; it gives one glimpses of life in bygone times.
The author uses bits and pieces from her journals, letters, and other keepsakes to solidify her claims. The writing is pretty straightforward. There is no obvious intention to make it literary, which gives it the appeal of a documentary. However, this isn't something I will subtract a star for, as this isn't a grave issue in the book. I did not have anything to dislike at all because there are also no errors, a testament to the book's exceptional editing. Due to the book's faultless storytelling, it deserves 5 out of 5 stars. If you're passionate about psychology and seeking an insightful memoir, this book is definitely worth considering.
