The Apostolic Church by Robert J. Scudieri

I have heard this phrase several times and often think it refers to the Pentecostal church, as it is often named Apostolic Church and has progressive teachings about Jesus and the Trinity. The author took a distinctive route in researching the meaning and origin of the term "Apostolic Church." In a bid to derive the original meaning of the word and the place it was first used, the author traveled to the ancient cities of Rome, Constantinople, and Nicaea to search for the origin of the Apostolic Church and help the church see its significance. The author’s search helped me understand how the early church saw itself and what made them face persecution without fear.

In this book, the author seeks to reveal the missionary understanding of the apostolic title and point readers to seek the gift given by God, as embedded in this phrase, because the Apostolic office is not by appointment but rather a calling from God. Did he succeed in achieving this goal? I found this journey timely, as it added depth and meaning to the author's work. It also guarantees authenticity and gives readers the opportunity to fact-check, as these places are still in existence.

The author touches on the creed and Roman involvement in the formation of the Catholic Church, providing a clear description of the Apostolic Church's history and mission and how we, in the modern era, can replicate its original intentions and approach to missionary work. After going through this book, readers will understand their duties as Christians in the local church. The author’s reflective style of writing effectively encourages readers to engage with the details shared in the book by reflecting on what they've learned and applying it to their own lives. The author also presented his findings in a simple and thoughtful way that allows events to unfold in an orderly manner, enabling readers to follow along with his insights gradually.

I appreciate that this book is timely, as the world tends to move on quickly and the original meaning of words is often lost in translation over time. This book is well-paced, well-formatted, and properly written. I found no errors in it and nothing to dislike about it. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Although this is a Christian book, it is also a research topic that will interest anyone open to learning new things that may have been lost in history and uncovering the meaning behind a term whose significance may have been overlooked.
