Review of Mind Over Matter Beyond Thoughts
Mind Over Matter Beyond Thoughts: A Practical Guide and Workbook to CBT for Adults by Shawni Marie is a self-help and professional book that takes readers through cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a type of psychotherapy that targets mental distortions to ensure mental well-being. Through this book, the author explores CBT in-depth and guides and shows readers how they can practically apply it in treating various mental illnesses and even their everyday lives.
There were several things I liked about this book. First, I liked that the author started from the very beginning of the CBT concept. Before delving into how CBT can be applied, she first defined it and provided its historical background. Shawni Marie McDonald does not assume that all her readers already know what CBT is, and this makes the book accessible to all readers, including those who are new to this concept. Second, I liked how well this book was structured. After defining and providing CBT's historical background, the author went ahead to show readers how it can be used to treat well-known mental problems such as stress, anxiety, and trauma, among others. Each of them was tackled in their own paragraphs, after which real-life stories and thought-provoking prompts were given. This approach makes the book practical, as readers not only see how other people applied CBT strategies, methods, and tools to regain or better their mental health, but they are also guided by the questions to curve their own healing paths. And lastly, I couldn't help but notice the author's passion for sharing her knowledge about CBT. This contagious enthusiasm, in turn, helped me gain more interest and thirst to dig deeper into this work, enhancing my gains and overall understanding of the concepts.
What I liked the most about this book was that the author did not only present how CBT can be applied to address well-known mental illnesses, like stress, anxiety, and depression, but she also showed us how it can be applied to better all aspects of our lives. For example, are you struggling with communication? That is one of the lesser-known areas of CBT applications you will find in this phenomenal book.
Overall, I did not find anything to dislike about this book. I found only a few errors, which were not enough to affect my final rating. Therefore, I am glad to give Mind Over Matter Beyond Thoughts: A Practical Guide and Workbook to CBT for Adults by Shawni Marie five out of five stars. I've given it the highest rating due to its practicality, inclusivity, and the author's apparent passion for the book's subject matter—CBT.
I highly recommend this book to individuals who want to regain control over their thoughts for mental and overall well-being. In particular, people plagued by various mental issues, like stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma, will greatly gain from it. The fact that this book is both a self-help and professional guide also makes it an invaluable resource to psychologists and therapists, among other mental health practitioners and specialists.
