Review of "French Letters"
[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of ""French Letters"" by John Fiennes.]
French Letters by John Fiennes should be called a traveler's guide, but it is so much more than that. It's the author's worldview from their travels where the reader can sit back and read but feel like they are going on an adventure.
I enjoyed the author's voice; Fiennes wasn't dry when speaking about the history, and there was humor in the different stories. The way the prose flowed made this relatable, as though we were sitting with Fiennes with a cup of coffee and listening to the author's adventures.
Even though Fiennes was talking about their journey from Australia to France, there were still fun tidbits about all the places they had stopped along the way. I enjoyed hearing about the family and friends along the journey. There is something nice about traveling to a foreign country and having someone there to help guide you when it comes to the attractions and food.
I enjoyed the travel across France with the author's cousin Helen. There was something quaint about how they spoke with people they never met, and that opened up new possibilities for them. For example, when they met the granddaughter of someone who worked at the Chateau de Montresor.
What I enjoyed most was all the food. I know when I travel, food is an important part of it for me. I like trying new things and always found Fiennes' descriptions mouth-watering. It made me want to travel for the food alone!
I was fascinated with the section on Madagascar because it's one of the places I hope to visit in my lifetime. Fiennes didn't sugarcoat the way it looked when the ship docked on the wharf. I appreciate that the description wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. There is something for everyone in this book if you give it a chance and dive in.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys new places. Even if they only dream of traveling but don't do it enough, this book helps to scratch that wanderlust itch. I found no errors in my readthrough due to excellent editing. There was nothing about this book I would change. For all the reasons above, I give this read five out of five stars.
