Events Are Easy… by Paul J Abbott is a nonfiction book about running events. Abbott is a talented composer with a PhD in music. He is an expert in running events, including international conferences, music festivals and exhibitions. He owns an events specialist company and has significant leadership experience.
The book is an overview of event planning and management, teaching readers how to deliver quality events. Abbott’s enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge is apparent throughout the book. He writes about every stage of running events and advises on best practices and avoiding pitfalls. He describes how he strives to make every event successful and gives practical advice on caring for staff and attendees. The book is a step-by-step guide to running events and covers additional aspects such as budget and costings, legislation, risk assessment and sustainability.
Abbott has a deep understanding of diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion. His information on this subject is insightful and useful to event planners. Abbott writes, “We must seek, proactively, to create environments in which everyone feels welcome and valued”. He believes key areas of accessibility must be addressed at every event to ensure everyone can attend.
The writing style flows and is clear and easy to read. The information is actionable and could be applied by the reader. Abbott comes across as a knowledgeable and courteous man, contributing to the book’s integrity.
On occasion, Abbott writes about his own experiences. He describes a time when there were cobblestones at a large venue, and he knew they would make it difficult for some people to get around. His solution was to fit new floors throughout the venue. As the event lasted a week, he felt that it was a worthwhile move. I don’t feel there were enough anecdotes like this from Abbott. As a seasoned event professional, he must have more stories to tell, which would have enhanced the book.
This book would appeal to anyone who works in event planning or would like to work in this field. It has everything you need to know to become an event specialist. I enjoyed reading this book and I felt that Abbott demonstrated real expertise. The editing is very professional and I award this book 5 out of 5 stars.
