This story is about a man named Vernon and what happened with his wife of 13 years. He thought she was his soulmate, but when she started distancing herself from him, it took him months to figure out why. It shows the strength of a father and what he does to protect his children as his life unraveled in the blink of an eye.
I liked this book; I am usually only into fiction, but the description intrigued me as a parent. The story was very compelling and didn’t take long to finish. Right away you're drawn in, curious about the mystery, and baffled by the truth. As the story goes on, you understand more and more about Vernon’s motives and the will he had to keep himself calm during a rough time. I disliked that I still had questions about Linda and why she chose to go down the path she did, but that was only because Vernon didn’t know either. The plot was refreshing to me, compared to the usual cliche endings in the fiction books I read. I had a good sense of the direction, but it exceeded my expectations. I guess you could say that there is a love triangle, but there is a lot more depth to it than that, so I can’t quite put it in that category, and the way the relationships between the characters unfold is a big twist. The end was satisfying and showed the similarities and differences of how things were about 46 years ago. I didn’t have any issues with plot holes or details that didn’t add up, the writing was easy to follow along with and comprehend. I rate this book a 5/5 for good editing, the strength of Vernon, and a horrible few months for him and his children. He did everything he could to keep his children safe and approached his situation more resiliently than I would have thought possible for this devastating situation. This is a must-read for the non-fiction community, but keep in mind that there are actual recordings from wiretapped phones that are lewd and use major profanity that may make some readers uncomfortable.
