In her book, Hugger Mugger: The Con Man Smile - Part 1, M.L. Stark bares her soul.

Deeply in love with her husband of twenty years, Paul, Mary is devastated when he cheats on her with his much younger secretary, Crystal. Coupled with her health problems, her husband's betrayal completely breaks her. To escape from the chaos at home in Denmark, Mary goes to Spain. Her husband and children do not join her on her vacation. Mary's friend recommends Dr. Drake Lucifer Bates to her for her health issues. From the very moment she hears his voice over the phone, a feeling of deja vu engulfs her. Despite many red flags, Mary falls for his charisma and sweet words.

Does Dr. Bates really love her, or is he taking advantage of her vulnerability? Will Mary choose Paul or Dr. Bates? Most importantly, will she finally be able to get the reigns of her life back?

Based on her life, M.L. Stark presents to us the story of a vulnerable woman who was taken advantage of by men who were supposed to be trustworthy. Being a beautiful woman, Mary had suffered abuse ever since her childhood. Mary gave Paul twenty years of her life. She was a devoted wife and mother who did everything to please her husband. Yet, Paul broke her heart. Dr. Bates, her physician, was supposed to heal her. Instead, he exploited her weaknesses and further pushed her into darkness.

Stark masterfully portrays Bates's psychological manipulation of Mary. Bates takes advantage of Mary's faith and her deepest secrets. He maneuvers everything to suit his needs. Paul, on the other hand, appears to be mostly indifferent. I have to say I loved Mary's daughter, Sandra. She was strong and understood Dr. Bates in her very first appointment with him.

Through Mary's story, M.L. Stark takes us to the UK, Europe, Israel, and Asia. The author beautifully intersperses the beauty of these places with her story. Also, I have to admire the amount of research done. Stark includes excerpts from articles and books to substantiate her points.

Mary's story is real and should be put out in the world to serve as a warning to women who unwittingly become prey to unscrupulous men every day. Her tale is of resilience and faith. M.L. Stark brings to us a tale of transformation that will not only touch our hearts but also empower us. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars, and I highly recommend it to fans of memoirs and psychological dramas. I had to take off a star as I found more than ten errors in the book. Though the errors did not detract much from my reading experience, I suggest a round of editing. The editing is the only thing that needs improvement. Apart from this, the book is absolutely perfect.
