Roping the Storms of Life Like a Cowgirl by Jan Pflaum is an inspirational book for adults. The author embraces the cowgirl mentality, describes it, and advocates for us all to aspire to it to gain a survivor mentality.

Tapping into cowgirl mentality means capturing the courage that lies within us all. A cowgirl gains strength from surviving storms in life. Cowgirls have purpose, determination, and no fear, and despite any adversities, they live each day to the full with gratitude to God. This attitude allows cowgirls to manage ranches, raise children, weather storms, and be successful rodeo competitors. The cowgirl spirit needs daily exercise for a healthy mind, body, and soul. Also, limitless gratitude fosters a positive mentality.

This book uses metaphors of a cowgirl mindset to motivate readers to release negative thought processes and not let turbulent times in life dampen the spirit. Equally important is faith and gratitude to God. The book contains scripture from the Bible, so it is more suitable for Christian readers. I enjoyed the description of cowgirls, with their strength and unstoppable grit. I also liked that the depiction of an ideal role model was a strong female.

Within the book are questions and checklists for the reader to fill in. I thought this was a unique addition and an opportunity for self-reflection. These worksheets allow the reader to think about the information given and make informed decisions about navigating troubled times in their life. Additionally, there are inspirational quotes and empowering stories to add to the impact of the author’s words.

I particularly enjoyed some snippets of cowgirl history and the pictures of some of the first cowgirls. I also enjoyed the information given about the author. A job as a hospice nurse affected the author. Working with families at their most vulnerable has given the author an insight into what a positive mindset can achieve.

The book is edited well. I loved that cowgirls are who we should all aspire to be like. I liked the added history and inspirational quotes. The use of metaphors was great. I liked how the exhausting trail of a cowgirl represented life and how we can change our mindset to traverse all obstacles. I thought the book was too short, and I would have been interested in the day-to-day life of a cowgirl as this may have given more power to the author’s convictions. All things considered, I give the book 4 out of 5 stars.

The idea of using a cowgirl’s grit and determination as a metaphor for resilience captivates me, especially how it ties to faith and gratitude. I’m curious about the self-reflection worksheets and the historical snippets of early cowgirls; it seems like these elements make the book more interactive and grounded. However, I’d want to know more about the day-to-day life of a cowgirl to see how relatable and practical the metaphor truly is. I might read it for the inspiration, but the brevity noted in the review makes me hesitant.

Using the ideology of "cowgirl" to motivate readers was really nice. There is a lot of information about cowgirls and I believe there is lot of moral knowledge that this book would impact readers.
