Review of Healing from Growing Up with a Narcissistic Parent
Healing from Growing Up with a Narcissistic Parent: A Guide to Reclaiming Your Life by Kelly Todd
I highly recommend Healing from Growing Up with a Narcissistic Parent: A Guide to Reclaiming Your Life by Kelly Todd. I have heard of narcissism but never really knew what it meant. In the first chapter, the author not only defines narcissism, but also explains varied types and degrees. The author continues with the importance and benefits of understanding narcissism. Her goal is to have the reader be informed, empowered, and protected. Much of her own experiences with her narcissistic mother are intermingled with the facts, to not only make it an interesting read, but to provide nurture and knowledge at the same time.
The second chapter explains common signs of narcissism, regardless of where it lies on the spectrum, and its effects on you. The third chapter examines your own behavior to see the possibility of narcissistic parenting being the root cause of that behavior. The psychological and physical effects will help the person understand where it is coming from. I would even say that this book is helpful to learn about narcissism in general, not only from a parenting aspect. A person could identify whether they are in a dangerous romantic relationship or need tips for dealing with a narcissistic coworker, for example.
I would warn the reader, that, if you think you may have or had a narcissistic parent, to have some sort of caution while reading because of the flood of emotions that could come out. The author is so knowledgeable, caring, and empathetic, and the validation she gives allows the reader to see how things really are or were. A warning is also given at the beginning of the book.
Much of the book holds valuable information for self-care and building self–esteem. This part of the book is excellent for any reader regardless of the book’s focus on narcissism. My favorite section was Developing Emotional Intelligence. Some of the other topics include boundaries, communication, affirmations, and goals. I liked how the author shared personal stories of setting boundaries with her daughter and her daughter’s grandmother. The author gives suggestions for types of therapy, building a support system, as well as addressing your pain and the topic of forgiveness.
I have read many self-help books and am genuinely impressed with this one. It is relatable, simple, and insightful. I appreciate the concise and thorough writing compared to other books I have read that are redundant and drag on. My first impression, at only the first chapter, was that it is easy to read and understand; the author knows what she is talking about; the book validates those that doubt their experiences and themselves; the book educates and gives hope, and also warns of the road ahead of the emotions that may come up while reading the book.
I felt as though I got to know this author. I added her to my favorite author section. I will end with sharing another favorite part of the book. At the end of the book, the author wrote an incredible letter to her father. Get the book, and you will see why. There is nothing I would change about this book. It was exceptionally well edited. For the reasons above, I give this book a five out of five rating.
