J. P. Moriarty wrote a four-volume set of books listing 50 interesting facts about each state in the United States. Interesting Facts for the Curious – USA: Volume 1- 600 Mind Expanding Facts from Alabama to Idaho is the first volume in this set. For each of the first 12 states (listed in alphabetical order), Moriarty wrote about 12 facts in detail and briefly mentioned 38 more. Political issues are not discussed. Each state’s natural beauty is expressed with awe and wonder. Some historical figures are mentioned, making them more relatable as you know more about their beginnings. We all know about the amazing Grand Canyon, but have you heard of the Wave? The Wave is a geological wonder of sandstone of various colors. Visitors are limited to 20 people per day to preserve this natural wonder in Arizona. Then there’s the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, where visitors can look for diamonds and keep whatever they find.

I enjoyed every page of this book. It raised my curiosity. I would love to visit every state to witness some of these wonders personally and to search for more. I was amazed to learn that Hawaii has 10 climate zones. I know it has sunshine and volcanoes, but I was unaware of the wet tropics and polar tundra. California is not the only state that has had a gold rush. Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, and Georgia have also had gold rushes. You can find diamonds in Arkansas and Delaware if you prefer them.

I didn’t like that I tried to find the other three volumes and could only find Volume 3. I would have wanted to see them all together in one book. I hope to be able to find the other two. This did not affect my rating.

I recommend this book to curious people, educators, and those who like to travel. It’s appropriate for all ages and all religions.

I rate Interesting Facts for the Curious – USA 5 out of 5 stars. It kept me interested. It was well-written. It made me want to learn more.
