Spring Break: A True Story of Hope and Determination] by Steven Benvenisti, Esq. is true. Ben, a college student at Trenton State University, had everything going for him. He was at the top of his class, had loving parents, a beautiful girlfriend, and many friends. People looked up to him. In his senior year of college, he took a vacation to Daytona Beach, Florida, on Spring Break. His friends gathered around him after he participated in judging a bikini bathing suit contest on MTV. He shared a few of his hundred ways to pick up a girl and then headed across the street. Boom! A car driven by a drunk driver was headed the wrong way down the street and plowed into him. His friends watched as his body crashed onto the hood and was slammed to the ground. With crushed legs and a traumatic brain injury, his future was not good.

Mr. Benvenisti tells a captivating story about this actual incident. I enjoyed reading this book very much. It kept me captivated. Ben’s family came to support him. He had a long road ahead of him. His parents were told that he was in the most profound coma possible and had suffered irreversible brain damage. The doctor kept referring to him as the patient. His family wanted him to be recognized as a person. They kept responding to the staff by saying his name. His mother hung pictures of him all over the room. His siblings sent an audio tape to play for him. His licensed therapist father believed in the power of positive thinking. He asked the doctor to call Ben by his name, and to step into the hallway if he wished to talk about low survival rates. Mr. Benvenisti is an advocate for M.A.D.D., Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He encourages young people and their parents to sign the Contract for Life. This is an agreement to go and get their children if they have been involved with drinking and need a ride home. You can find this contract at https://www.dsslaw.com/stevens-story/contract-for-life/.

There was not anything about this book that I did not like. Despite the terrible disaster, it had a positive message throughout. The life principles of staying in the moment and trying twice as hard for as long as possible can be applied to many circumstances.
I rate Spring Break: A True Story of Hope and Determination 5 out of 5 stars. It is a compelling story that held my interest throughout. It’s a confirmation that positive thinking is the breeding ground for miracles.

I recommend this book to everyone. I especially recommend it for students, families of victims, survivors, attorneys, nurses, rehab professionals, doctors, bartenders, and all drivers. Please have a designated driver if you’re going out for a night on the town.
