Review of Legacy: Wisdom of African Traditions and the Bible
Legacy: Wisdom of African Traditions and the Bible is a book written by Chris Morehouse. The author of this book draws a comparison between Christian and African proverbs, the latter come from different communities across the continent. The author compares several African proverbs about a certain topic with a Christian proverb that reflects the same topic in order to draw a similarity. The author then offers the readers insightful analysis and interrogations about the message conveyed through the proverbs.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Despite being short, Legacy: Wisdom of African Traditions and the Bible effectively communicates a powerful message. Chris Morehouse connects Christian and African proverbs about love, hate, compassion, sacrifice, and many other topics throughout the book.
The author allows readers to learn more about African traditions, which are often overlooked and ignored in the Western world, while demonstrating how powerful messages and great values are shared by many cultures.
I was able to learn more about Christian principles and proverbs thanks to this book. Learning about "how to love one's enemy," "compassion," "kindness we need to show toward anyone," and other topics brought me some peace I didn’t know that I needed.
It was a wonderful opportunity to discover how much various cultures around the world are, in fact, similar to one another, while also learning about wonderful values that promote serenity and altruism, it was such a fantastic experience.
The wording is flawless, and the author's choice of vocabulary is ideal for communicating the results of their investigation without leaving readers confused. Moreover, I really enjoyed learning about significant symbols in African cultures.
I would have loved to know more about the African proverbs the author promotes in their book, but that's the only negative point I could think of. The origin of the proverbs, the society from where they came from, perhaps the historical setting behind these proverbs, or other details would have been interesting to me. Nonetheless, the work furnished by the author and their collaborator to produce such a well-documented work is amazing.
Overall, I rate Legacy: Wisdom of African Traditions and the Bible 5 out of 5. I gained a lot of knowledge about African and Christian principles from the wonderful work that went into this book. The simple but effective layout allows readers an excellent understanding of what the author wishes to convey from his research. Obviously, this book is amazingly written with great proofreading, which allows a very pleasant reading.
Each of these qualities justifies this book’s perfect score.
Even if I had liked to learn a bit more about the historical context behind each of these proverbs, this book is still amazing and impressive regarding the dedication it took to write it and make it accessible and pleasant to read.
I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone who wants to learn more about African and Christian proverbs and principles!
