[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Pecked to Death by Ducks" by Rochelle Brandon, MD.]
Pecked to Death by Ducks: How Minutiae Can Distract You from Living Your Best Life by Rochelle Brandon, MD, offers readers advice on how to identify and reduce the aggravating nuisances, or “ducks,” that occur in everyday life. While a single “duck” is not too bothersome, a whole flock can be overwhelming. Going even further, the reader gains insight as to what behavior encourages ducks to mob to them. While the bulk of the book is general enough to apply to anyone, the last chapter gives advice to specific groups of people, such as working mothers and individuals facing medical issues.
I found the content insightful. While not every section will apply to every individual, I can confidently say that anyone who reads the book will walk away with at least one idea for self-improvement and duck mitigation. I deal with a lot of mental clutter and have been successfully employing a couple of tips for the last few days. I feel more focused and in control of my mental ducks.
The author is not verbose; the chapters are well-structured with succinct segments. This makes it easier to digest the content and be able to recall it later when it is needed. Each chapter ends with a checklist and recommended action items. This is where there is a big opportunity for improvement. The formatting is poorly done. Spacing is a big issue. Some bullet points or headers are on the previous line instead of occupying their own lines, and some words are missing the space between them. Recreating these lists as tables could remedy the issues, making the lists look more professional and reducing the number of errors in the book.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to anyone feeling overwhelmed by physical and mental clutter, but you might need to create your own tools to make it effective.
