It had been a downward spiral resulting from her postpartum depression. As each day passed, alcohol became her solace and without knowing, she had become addicted to it. After she was charged with a second DUI, Elizabeth Hansen Kincaid was court-ordered into a rehabilitation facility for nine months. This would serve as her turning point.

When Carol Hansen Grey learned of her daughter’s plight, she was devastated. Still, she made a courageous decision. She would stand at her daughter’s side through it all. Every day, and sometimes more than once a day, she wrote her an inspirational quote. Carol Hansen Grey let her daughter know that she was loved and that her mother was proud of her for taking steps toward sobriety. In total, she sent Liz two hundred and fifty-five cards. What devotion!

Know You Are Loved by Carol Hansen Grey is a collection of all the inspirational quotes, fortified by personal messages of love and encouragement, that Grey sent Liz while she was in rehab.

One thing that stands out for me in the book, Know You Are Loved, is that even though the messages were meant for the author’s daughter during the difficult moments, they are still applicable to everyone who needs an understanding partner while going through tough times. So many are hurting today not just from addictions but all sorts of issues. Many also long for a way out or quicker recovery. The words of Carol Hansen are tender and affectionate and will penetrate even the deepest pain.

The beauty of this book is the reason it was written in the first place. Grey’s devotion is simply incredible. At a time she may have felt discouraged herself, she did what many cannot do, stand by their child through thick and thin. Carol Hansen Grey has walked down the path of pain; she has been there, felt it but did not let the experience crush her. Instead, she came out with a message that will transform even more lives. The message is to stand by each other and support each other as reflected by each page of the book.

I also liked the wide range of ways that the book’s content can be applied. Anyone can buy it for themselves or gift a friend. Additionally, I thought it was a great place to draw inspiration from when talking with people who are downcast. Reading Know You Are Loved was utterly uplifting and hence I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.

I'm curious about the book's layout and composition. If it's just a compilation of quotes or small thoughts, is it just stanzas separated by spaces? Are they grouped by theme, date, something else?

Thanks for this review!

I know how difficult it is to overcome depression and how much more difficult it is for the people around the one who is suffering to make him/her feel loved. I've read a memoir written by the famous Turkish writer Elif Shafak about the consequences and manifestation of postpartum depression. The book is called Black Milk and I am recommending it to any woman who has to cope with the challenge of being both a mother and a career woman. Thank you for your review!

I agree that the beauty is definitely in the purpose behind the book, but it's great that these inspirational messages can be applied to all kinds of different situations. Thanks for the review.

Reading this book made me understand that some times being supportive especially in a difficult situation actually make a big difference to the person in that situation. I think i will recommend this book to some family that are undergoing similar problems.

Thank's for the review.

This sounds pretty devastating, although it is wonderful that this woman’s daughter had such good support at such a difficult time. I’m glad there’s so much more awareness and understanding these days of problems with both addiction and depression. Great review.

Inspirational quotes usually annoy me more than actually inspire, but I must say this book sounds sweet and emotional. I am sure the personal gift of these notes from her mother were tremendous for helping Elizabeth recover. Knowing you are loved is indeed a vital part of our emotional well-being.

Inspirational quotes are really helpful, you know. Sometimes one can find one quote that is perfect for what they are going through. I think the book is amazing and will bring about positive change in people's lives.

Thanks for your comment. The memoir that you quote sounds interesting too!

I read the first few pages of this book while waiting for my turn at the dentist's office. Unfortunately, when I was done, the book was already gone. Apparently, it was owned by a patient. Nevertheless, I find Know You Are Loved interesting. I want to buy a copy of this book.
