The Ultimate Guide to Understanding Your Cat: A How-to for Cat Lovers Looking to Understand Their Cat’s Behavior and Weird Habits is an interesting information-packed book about your cats and how to care for them. I have two cats, and I was hoping I would learn some new information on how to better care for my furbabies.

The Ultimate Guide to Understanding Your Cat is a thorough overview of basic cat care at all stages of their lives. The book is organized by different topics which include feline mental health, physical health, moving tips and stress, grooming needs and household hazards. I found that one of the most important sections is on how to recognize that something is wrong and when to take your cat to the vet. The author pointed out several signs that I had not known before and I am grateful for that knowledge.

Personally, I give this guide a 4 out of 5 stars. I only removed one star because it is a somewhat basic guide and does not go into much depth about the topics it covers. From this book I learned about new (to me) poisonous plants to keep away from my cats, such as jade, aloe, and tomato plants. Included were suggestions for common cat misbehaviors, which I learned are usually rooted in anxiety, unmet needs, or ill health. Feline mental health is an often overlooked subject, and it was eye-opening to see it covered in this helpful guide. My cats could definitely use a good food puzzle. The puzzles are little challenges that the pets have to overcome to get to snacks that you put inside. These puzzles allow the cats to use their brains and natural curiosity to work for a reward. It helps reduce feline depression. Now that I know what kinds of enrichment toys are out there, I have some ideas on what kinds of toys I can make for them.

The organization of the book was easy to read and understand. The cute cat photos provided an added bonus as I turned the pages. As a history fan, I doubly enjoyed the ancient cat history section. I did not previously know the history of the Lucky Cat in Japan. If the author ever decides to write a full book on cat history, I will read it!

The Ultimate Guide to Understanding Your Cat would be a great book to read with kids who want to adopt a family cat and need to know what all that entails. This book is suitable for readers of many ages. I recommend it.
