Review of Divorcing into Paradise
Divorcing into Paradise is a memoir by Jennifer King that reflects on her most significant relationships in life, especially her marriage to her husband, JC.
The couple fell in love and got married; then reality hit, and their marriage did not turn out as she had imagined. They faced many challenges. Differences in personality and lifestyle led them to hurt each other. Their unresolved emotional pain ramped up, and one day, divorce was the only way. It is a familiar pattern in many failed marriages.
What sets this memoir apart is how the author and her ex-husband handled life after the divorce. They remained friends and continued to care for each other. They also made sure their divorce did not negatively affect their son. I was amazed by her husband’s kindness and wisdom, especially in the way he supported all of his children, ex-wives, and mothers-in-law. Does one person really have the time, resources, and energy to do all that for so many others? I wondered at some point while reading.
Yet, this same man was also the one who had been abusive to his wife during their marriage. The book touches on many challenges a relationship can face—domestic violence, verbal abuse, infidelity, financial hardship, and raising a child with an illness. It is difficult to imagine one person enduring all such things, but the author did. She later found healing through spiritual methods like praying, meditating, and journaling. But I couldn’t help wondering if she and her ex-husband had been able to talk about the abuse in their marriage openly. Had his anger, rage, and violence been worked through, would things have turned out differently? In the end, though, it is the author’s personal journey of growth, where romantic love transforms into God’s unconditional love. The title, Divorcing into Paradise, captures the heart of the memoir beautifully.
Through her story, Jennifer King has shown different forms of love, ones that deserve to be shared with others. The book is engaging and dramatic, much like a work of fiction. It is relatable and flows smoothly. However, I give it 4 out of 5 stars because there are more than a handful of typos and punctuation errors that need further editing. Other than that, I have no criticism and would recommend it to anyone looking for a touching memoir of love.
