Kitchen Chaos to Culinary Bliss is a short, compact introduction to the world of cooking. After many years of experience as a professional chef and in culinary management, Mary Lummerding has made it her mission to introduce people to the joy of cooking with her book. In a world where time and money are often limited, and people tend to order take-out, Chef Mary offers helpful tips and tricks to cook homemade meals. She advises on meal-prepping, food storage, how to organize and plan a trip to the grocery store, and how to save money when shopping on a budget. The book additionally covers ideas to make the whole cooking process, from preparation to cleanup, more fun and enjoyable. And to put Mary’s advice into practice, the book also includes nine easy and delicious recipes.

Mary Lummerding published a book that might be very helpful to people new to cooking. The lists for essential cooking equipment, basic ingredients, herbs, and spices are perfect for anyone in need of completely restocking their kitchen. Her advice on how to buy the ideal kitchen knife and to get a better grip on a cutting board might save some inexperienced readers from dangerous incidents. As for me, I love to cook and do so very often, so many of Chef Mary’s tips were already part of my usual routine. Tough, I will definitely consider including some of her favorite basic ingredients like hearts of palm and different kinds of beans into my daily cooking routine. To go with her recommendations, Chef Mary added recipes that are easy to recreate and can be made even without much experience. I like that she selected a variation of different dishes spanning from snacks over main dishes to desserts.

The only negative thing I have to say is that I would have liked the overall structure of the book to have been more consistent. For instance, some titles or side notes like “A Dash of Mary” are sometimes in different formats, and the equipment lists for the recipes are randomly placed before or after the instructions.

To conclude, I rate Kitchen Chaos to Culinary Bliss with 5 out of 5 stars. Apart from the minor structural inconsistencies, the book is a perfect guide for people completely new to cooking and shows how to make grocery shopping, organization, preparation, and cooking easier and more enjoyable. The book is suitable for readers of all ages and might be especially useful for young people living alone for the first time without experience in the kitchen. The book also makes a great gift for family members and friends who don't like cooking. Who knows, maybe Chef Mary will change their minds.
