Review of Kitchen Chaos to Culinary Bliss
Kitchen Chaos to Culinary Bliss: Organize and Enjoy Cooking by Chef Mary Lummerding is a nonfiction book offering helpful home cooking advice. The author is a trained chef with a background in culinary management. This book is the culmination of her lengthy career as a chef and professional cooking coach.
What I liked most about the book is the formatting. The author uses bullet points to highlight various subtopics. My favorites were the benefits of cooking, ways to fit cooking into your schedule, and reasons to make home meals. The points listed in each section were informative and well-presented for readers to take notes. The author iterates that the information in this book is to help readers quickly master the basics. The presentation aids the author’s intention. I was puzzled when the author revealed that she maxed out credit cards when eating out. Though a point many can relate to, I found irony in the fact that a professional chef avoided cooking at home. The segments narrating the author’s journey make the book relatable and prove that anyone, no matter their skill level, can master home cooking.
The author develops ways to make cooking at home enjoyable. She dedicates a whole chapter to kitchen organization. She highlights the importance of prep work and optimizing one’s workspace. “Leave the kitchen as tidy as you found it.” This quote still rings in my head. The author lists various kitchen tools and their uses, plus tips on how to procure them affordably. I like that she also listed what to avoid, like Teflon pans. I picked up many tips when I read the time management and food storage sections. Readers will learn much about where and how long to store foods like vegetables and spices. These are helpful tips that will encourage readers to optimize their home kitchens.
After providing extensive information on kitchen optimization, the author presents delectable recipes that readers should try. Some of these dishes were new, but I liked that the author included widely available ingredients. The author also thoughtfully included the necessary equipment at the beginning of each recipe. I could visualize the recipes as I read. The seafood pasta and turkey surprise ended up on my to-do list.
There’s nothing I dislike about the book. The lack of typos and grammatical errors indicates that the book underwent professional editing. I will rate the book 5 out of 5 stars because there’s no reason to deduct a star. It is beautifully formatted and easy to read. I recommend the book to beginner cooks and those wanting to revamp their home kitchens.
