Thomas Richard Harry is a political conservative whose study of the history and current trend of American politics informs his opinion in his book. Boom! A revolting situation is a non-fiction, political text and is an expression of the author’s dissatisfaction with a political system that doesn’t seem to bear much fruit. The two-party system in the country has failed at fully representing the interest or needs of the Americans voters who support the two parties. He himself chooses to identify himself as an independent because the dual party system doesn’t inspire any confidence in him to support either of the two parties.
Through extensive research on the history of American politics, and study of the current opinion polls, the author’s view is factually argued out. This, in my opinion is the most suitable method to write a book on politics. Sometimes political commentary is influenced by a writer’s ‘blind faith’ in a political party that the writer hardly knows of its history or what the party stands for. As I read through the book, I could tell the writer is very passionate and desirous to see a change in American politics and even goes ahead to invite others to join him in the revolutionary journey.
I liked the fact that the writer did not take any sides when it came to evaluating the two parties. He addressed the faults in both parties thereby supporting his decision not to support any of the parties. His effort to go to great lengths to explore the history of American politics is admirable to say the least. I know it takes extensive research to script a historical piece. The part on Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson’s differing political views was the most enjoyable to me. That could be because I enjoy reading history but learning about those two was helpful.
This political text doesn’t fail to achieve the purpose for which it was intended for. As a person who is interested in learning about American politics, this was a page turner for me. Studying a political system requires knowledge of the roots of that political system and this is well captured by the author. Even though some readers may not agree with some of the author’s opinion, his reasons for his opinion though disputable, are factual. However, in my opinion, in any political system in the world differences in opinion is what makes a political system relevant based on whether or not it meets its objectives.
I rate Boom! A revolting Situation 4 out of 4 stars. The book seems professionally edited because I did not encounter any spelling errors and each chapter was perfectly developed. I would recommend it to anybody interested in learning the American political system, how it has evolved and the reason for its current status. students pursuing a career in political science might also find this book useful.
