My Discovery of America by Julian Perez was an insightful book full of rich history and passionate writing. The author discusses America’s biggest government documents, like the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Amendments, and the Federalist, and compares them to the workings of software: “a series of instructions that are executed strictly one after the other.” It’s an interesting concept, and I actually learned quite a bit. I rate this book a 3 out of 5.

Something I admired about Julian Perez’s writing was how intelligent and passionate it came across. I think it’s admirable to write about this subject even though the author is not originally from the United States of America, but from Cuba. In my opinion, that shows how much genuine interest they had in the topic, therefore making me feel more inclined to read it. It wasn’t like reading a boring textbook in school, My Discovery of America was insightful while also providing all of the facts. There was a unique perspective provided because of the author’s ethnicity, and that was a nice touch. As someone who was born in America and has rarely left America, I’ve never considered how others might view our policies and laws.

I found over ten grammar mistakes in this book, and unfortunately, it slightly hindered my enjoyment of the book. Although the author stated beforehand that English wasn’t their first language, I expected the editing to be more solid. I would suggest combing through this book in further detail and having a few other people peer review it. Proper spelling and grammar would heighten this book’s professionalism and help readers take the context more seriously. For this reason, I deducted two stars from my rating: one star for the editing and another star for the number of mistakes.

Overall, My Discovery of America by Julian Perez was a nice, unique read. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys American government or to anyone who is interested in learning about the American government.
