Review of Room Without Walls: A Transformational Journey
“Room Without Walls: A Transformational Journey” by Ruth Ferguson is an inspirational story of the author’s healing journey from different kinds of emotional and physical abuse from her husband. She started by sharing the circumstances that led to her marriage with her husband. Then, she discussed how her husband began to change right before her eyes. She shared how she used different coping mechanisms, like being emotionally distant, to endure her marriage. It got so bad that she contemplated suicide. At the peak of her suffering, her journey towards healing began. Follow the author as she takes you through this transformational journey.
Books like this are constantly triggering for me. However, it doesn’t stop me from reading them. Every time I read about a woman enduring an abusive marriage, I remember my cousin who died in an abusive marriage. If I had access to books like this, things might have ended differently for her. But this review is not about my cousin. I want to applaud the author’s tenacity in having the courage to embark on a healing journey. Not many women are as fortunate as she is (my cousin is an example). I appreciate her more because she is courageous enough to share her experience to help millions of other women dealing with abusive relationships.
One of the things that stood out in this book was the author’s unwavering faith in God. This faith helped her through the darkest moments in her life, especially during her transformative healing journey. She always quoted Bible verses that gave her strength to endure those challenging times in her life and marriage. One of the verses she said inspired her was Jeremiah 29:11, and I quote: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” She acknowledges that it reminded her that God loved her and knew what was best for her.
Another thing I liked about the author’s story was her ability to take responsibility for any role she played in her plight. For many women in similar situations, the easy thing to do would be to put all the blame on their husbands and play the victim. These words cemented my respect for the author: “Like the experience with my assistant, I also understood in my marriage that I was not the only victim: my husband was as well – a victim of his past and his own struggles.”
I absolutely have no dislike for the book, and it was exceptionally edited. Therefore, I rate it a five out of five. I’d love to recommend this book to every woman needing healing from the trauma of an abusive relationship. However, the Christian perspective of this book might alienate many non-Christians.
