What Did They Say?: Observations from Eighth-Grade Students is a nonfiction book by Todd Sherman.

Todd was an English teacher for 23 years. During those years, he collected all sorts of funny comments from his students. The idea of doing “Quote of the Day” came to him when a student made a silly comment out loud during class. It made the whole classroom pause and laugh. Since that day, Todd has collected every quote to put up on the classroom walls. The students loved this idea, and they voted for the best quotes. The contents of this book are neatly organized in chapters. The first chapter explains how the idea of these quotes began. The next chapters are organized by themes. For example: geography, food, animals, sports, the teacher’s own quotes, and many more. This makes the book readable in any order that the person reading it wants. You could open a different page every day and read a few quotes. You could also read it all at once; it’s your choice. That’s the great thing about this book.

What I liked the most about this book is that it’s relatable. We all had these moments when we were in school. A kid in our class would make a funny comment, and we would all laugh. Unfortunately, no one wrote these down, so most of them have been forgotten. This teacher clearly cared about his students. He made classes fun and gave the students something to look forward to. I wish the world had more teachers like this. There is nothing about this book that I disliked.

Readers who enjoy light, heartwarming, funny books should read this. I don’t think there is anyone who wouldn’t like it unless they don’t enjoy humor. The editing in this book is flawless; it has no errors. Because I enjoyed everything about this book, I rate it 5/5 stars.
