Dear Abigail is a well-written, heart-wrenching book that moved me to tears. The author describes the life of his wife and daughter vividly in a way that makes you not want to put the book down. It depicts real life—that not every ending is a happy one, no matter how much we wish it could be.

Richard Rees, the author, writes about the awful diagnosis—ovarian cancer, that both his wife Rachel and daughter Carys battled with. He describes their lives from the very beginning in letter form, with the intention of presenting it to his granddaughter one day.

Richard describes how Carys got married to the love of her life and had a beautiful baby girl, which was always a dream of hers. The book is filled with strong emotions, love being the biggest one. You can really tell how much he loved his wife, daughter, and precious granddaughter. Richard put his own life on hold to care for Carys in her last days on earth and to spend time with Abigail. Even after Ian, Carys’s husband, ends up remarrying and moving away, Richard describes loving and missing his granddaughter.

The way the author describes the strong faith of his wife and daughter really stood out to me. No matter the rough diagnoses that they have received, they stood unwavering in their faith, ready to meet their Maker.
Richard Rees, lost both his wife and daughter to the same illness, but somehow found the strength to keep going through his grief. Watching his wife and daughter fight for their lives until the very end was no easy feat, but he managed to get through it. He truly wrote a beautiful book in memory of his loved ones.

I rated the book 5/5 because it is beautifully written, and draws the reader in. It does meet expectations, although I wish it had a happier ending. Nevertheless, life does have its ups and downs. The editing quality was exceptional, and I did not notice any mistakes.

This book will relate well to readers who have experienced grief and loss in their lives. Readers who enjoy nonfiction heartwarming stories will enjoy this book. Also, readers going through cancer or another illness will be able to relate to the similar experiences that were vividly described by the author.
