Do you want to taste food from other countries but do not want to travel? The International Taste Foodie: Travel and Food by Linda Lucia Swinney contains 15 recipes for Italian, Spanish, German, American, Asian, British, and Swedish dishes that can be made in your kitchen that you are sure to enjoy.

My favorite aspect of this book is that many of the ingredients used in these recipes can be found in most kitchens. In some recipes, the author has provided substitutes for the recommended ingredients. For example, what can be used if you don’t have the egg noodles that a recipe calls for? If you don’t like lamb meat, can another type of meat be used in the recipe? I appreciate that the author explained why certain steps in the recipe were necessary to follow. One example is the importance of soaking meat. Linda also explained how to remove the membranes from the meat, which I found helpful. I also appreciate that the author recommended side dishes for some recipes. The pictures before each recipe showed me what the end product should look like.

This book is not without its flaws. I was disappointed that it had not been professionally edited. A professional editor would have found multiple errors and repetitive text. For example, the word “and” is used instead of “in,” “boil” instead of “foil,” and “steer” instead of “stir.” The first few recipes in the book did not include what country they were from, and I assumed they were American foods because stuffed peppers, steak, meatloaf, and salmon are common American foods. I recommend that the author clarify this for readers unfamiliar with American foods.

I gave this book 2 out of 5 stars because every recipe in this short book had grammatical errors, some of which made them hard to understand. The negative aspects were distracting and reduced my enjoyment of reading the book, as the positive aspects discussed above did not compensate for them. I only gave it two stars because I learned some new recipes I am eager to try.

I recommend this book if you want to experience foods from other countries in your own kitchen. However, you should avoid it if errors and repetitive text bother you.
