You Don't Know Sh*t About Leadership by G. Damon Wells is a critical take on contemporary leadership and leadership training, highlighting common misconceptions about leadership while offering a new leadership framework, the Ballistic Leadership Framework, rooted in five core principles: evolutionary theory, neuroscience, personality theory, complexity theory, and game theory. The evolutionary theory explains how our inherited instincts, such as our desire for security and sustainability, influence leadership decisions. Neuroscience takes into account factors such as dopamine addiction and neural plasticity in modelling leadership. Personality theory recognizes the existence of different classes of personalities, modelling leadership according to each class. Complexity theory factors in the interconnectedness of modern organizations and the influence each part of the organization has on other parts. Game theory offers a framework where the entities in and outside an organization act as pieces in a game. This book consists of three main parts: the first part highlights the shortcomings of modern leadership, the second delves into the aforementioned pillars of the Ballistic Leadership Framework, and the last part focuses on the practical application of the Ballistic Leadership Framework to typical leadership scenarios.

I love how well-structured this book’s content is, with a formal and textbook-like format that starts with facts and theory and finishes with practical applications of the theory. The author included references to the book’s content at the end and one diagram in the book that captures the essence of the Ballistic Leadership Framework that is easy to print and remember. I also like how relatable, insightful, and easily digestible most of the content in this book is. This book features multiple examples of well-known failures of corporations, such as HP, Nokia, Kodak, etc., which the author used to illustrate common leadership pitfalls. The author used different theories, principles, and analogies, offering a refreshing look into why these failures occurred. An insightful principle I learned for the first time in this book is the Peter Principle, which explains why organizations sometimes promote leaders based on the wrong criteria. I like how well the author laid out his arguments, backed by raw statistics in some cases and well-established theories in others, making the content more convincing.

I rate this book five out of five stars for the following reasons. Firstly, the book's content is well structured, following a systematic study of the main topic and complementing it with multiple references. Secondly, this book is replete with analogies, theories, and practical examples of leadership failures and successes that help put the theoretical content into practice. Thirdly, the flowchart in this book depicting all the core elements of the Ballistic Leadership Framework is a big plus for me, making revisiting and remembering the author’s teachings effortless.  I don’t have anything negative to say about this book. Other than a couple of borderline profanities, there are no non-borderline profanities, sexual, or violent content in this book. I highly recommend this book to readers of all religions and professionals from all industries.
