THE BACKYARD HOMESTEADER BIBLE
Raising Chickens for Fun, Profit, and Food

By James Harrison

Have you ever considered raising chickens? As the title suggests, this book is about just that.  After reading the book, you will know whether you want to take on this endeavor. There is so much more than meets the eye about chicken raising. The book covers everything, from planning the chickens' arrival to their end of life. It is surprising how much information is needed when considering investing in chickens. You need to know how much space each chicken will need and the number of chickens you will have. Depending on the breed of chicken, you need to know what kind of feed and additives to feed them. When reading about the different breeds of chickens, I googled each one to see what each looked like; I didn't realize how many different kinds there were. The best part was when I looked up the breed called "the naked chicken," the picture that appeared was blurred out. I assume it was blurred because it was called naked. I had a chuckle over that.

The book reads as if the author is talking directly to you. The book is easy to follow and understand, as the author is excellent at explaining everything necessary to know if one decides to become a chicken owner. I liked that the author did not belabor any one issue but gave a comprehensive, concise view of the positives and the negatives. I also like how the author delivers his information with such passion.

Anyone thinking of inviting chickens into their life should read this book. It gives you a thorough understanding of what it takes. If you choose to raise chickens, you will have your eyes wide open.

The book is worth reading. I give it 4 out of 5 stars. My suggestion to the author is that the editing needs a closer look, as I found more than a couple of errors. That is the reason I deducted one star from my rating.  If there had been no errors, the book would be a five out of five stars.

There is no profanity in this book. For sexual content, there is a picture of two chickens mating in the chapter Flock Physiology. Other than that, there was no other sexual content.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in raising chickens. You will learn all there is to know about chickens and be able to make an informed decision.
