The book Appetite for Risk by Robert R. Abbott is a captivating memoir that immerses the reader into the author’s encounters with thrilling events and daring escapades that are anything but ordinary. Abbott vividly narrates his close encounters with danger and how he got himself out of the difficult situations, whether it was the Mae West malfunction, which was his final skydive. How he got away with smuggling and money laundering activities during his youthful days, the march with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, the adventures with the Peace Corps in Nigeria where he dodged river pirates and had a one-on-one confrontation with a spitting cobra, and many other near-death encounters.

After leaving Africa, Abbott spent his following years in saltwater, where he did both diving and surfing. At one point he almost died while he was scuba diving and during his time as a charter boat captain in Hawaii, he encountered hundreds of sharks. Along the way, Abbott decided to settle down and start a family, being a father to his two children, Tom and Michelle. He also left fishing to put his advanced degree as a marine biologist to use.

Abbott reflects on environmental factors, the influence of upbringing and genetic effects as some of the things that drove his appetite for risk. He explores how his ancestors’ behaviors and characters might have contributed to shaping his appetite for risk and how he handled and got himself out of risky situations.

I have rated this book a five out of five because, first, the book has been professionally edited, and on my end, I have not seen any instances of typos and close to zero grammatical errors. Second, the author has described his events, painting a vivid picture such that when you’re reading the book, you feel like you’re experiencing these events alongside him, and you’re curious to find out what happens next. Lastly, the way the author has infused his narrative with a rich blend of humor just makes this book exceptional!

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in real-life adventures.
