[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Light in the darkness 50 reasons and more not to commit suicide" by Dr. Robert Bentley III DNP, MSN, MPH, PMHNP-BC.]
There are so many reasons why life is worth living. Light in the Darkness: 50 Reasons and More Not to Commit Suicide by Dr. Robert Bentley III DNP, MSN, MPH, PMHNP-BC aims to remind readers of just that. This book contains 50 reasons to choose life. Each of those reasons is expanded on further with 10 additional points listed. It’s a quick and inspiring read that reminds readers that there is always a reason to keep going.
I think the greatest thing about this book is that you can open it to any page and find a reason why life is worth living. Each reason the author gives is short and to the point. There’s no need to spend hours reading in order to understand the message. The book doesn’t need to be read in order, either. You can choose any reason from the table of contents that seems the most relevant to what you need to hear at the moment.
I also liked how the author emphasized the value of seeking help. Dr. Bentley made it clear that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. By being honest and open about your struggles, you can serve as an inspiration for others who are going through the same thing. Every chapter ended with a call to action for the reader to dial the 988 crisis line. I liked that this message was at the end of every section in large, bold font. It made it impossible to forget or ignore.
While I think there is immense value in this book, I didn’t find it very emotionally moving. After a while, the reasons began to feel like platitudes. Other than that, I have no critiques. The book was easy to read and professionally edited, with an overall message that I think anyone would benefit from. Therefore, I would give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a reminder that life is beautiful and worth living. Whether you are going through a difficult time or could simply use an extra dose of positivity in your day, hopefully, this book will inspire you to persevere.
