The book was written by William E. Combs. The basic relevance of this book is the new perspective it provides to the biblical events through which sin and death entered the world. Starting from the conversation between Eve and the serpent, the deception and the eating of the forbidden fruit- the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. It was indicated how this knowledge, inherent in the fruit took away the innocence of the first couple and brought to them the realization of nakedness. This position and realization resulted in what the author called death- separation from God.
What really grabbed my attention were the logical statements that incite me to ponder and meditate each biblical reference and made me dislodge some of the traditional beliefs which alluded 'good conduct' to sinlessness. Traditional beliefs and mindset reduced the life of sin to a set of rules and behavior rather than 'nature and knowledge' apart from God-kind of knowledge. It was so interesting to find out that Even though Adam was innocent and there seemed to be no threat to his life yet he needed to live and remain secure through faith in God's kind of knowledge which was not offered by his sensual feelings or physical experience but by the walk of faith- dependence on God's integrity.
Although I have read the bible passages especially the book of Genesis many times it never dawned on me the word sin was not used by God to describe Adam's disobedience. My eyes opened to the fact that rather the act of Adam and Eve it was their nature that was the problem.
I love every part of the book. Initially, I wanted to disagree with the points raised when the author illustrated with an event where his wife had received a word of knowledge from God that their church member's kidney stone sickness was going to be dissolved by God's power. I thought God's word- the Bible, already reveals His will concerning healings of any sort. But I came to a point where I realized that in dealing with any problem we should not lean on our understanding but allow God to direct us in all our ways.
The author offers that, the fallen state of the unregenerate man, not his act of rebellion, was the issue. The result was the knowledge of good and evil rather than the live dependent on God's word and declaration.
The book upturned my understanding- making me see how God could not just forgive us an act of grace and mercy but must punish the sin of Adam on his Son. The book defined sin in a more contemporary way and narrates the reasons and steps to true salvation. The author also defines salvation in relation to sin and its nature.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was carefully edited and the composition is inspiring. I like the fact that the book opened my eyes to know the origin of sin and the knowledge of the grace offered by Jesus Christ. The book is carefully authored for both Christians and non-Christians.
