The Ultimate Guide to Zombies by Dave Robertson
Honestly, I was a little apprehensive about reading this book. I was afraid it would be some synchophantic elongated essay with the basic theme of “Zombies are awesome, cool and totally bad.” I enjoy a zombie as well as the next person, but I was hoping for something with more substance than that. Thankfully, I was not disappointed.
This book parlays a wealth of information to the reader. It begins with a history, myth and what situations lead to our current zombie mythology. This was very interesting to me, and I learned the basis for zombie lore.
The author also breaks down the history and progression of zombies in media. This is a combination of movies, comics, tv shows and video games. I found the chronology and progression of current zombie mythology/rules to be educational. It was interesting to find out where some of my ideas about zombie behavior come from.
Intermingled with the zombies in media portion are the different types of zombies, which included well thought out theories on how each type of zombie came to be. This presented me with ideas about zombies I had never considered before. I had not thought about the different zombie behaviors or the different scenarios that lead to each different sort of zombie outbreak.
Once the author goes into all of this information, he follows it by explaining zombie anatomy. This again is something I had not thought about. I just kind of blindly went through life thinking a zombie would be pretty easy to kill and didn’t consider important details. You need to read the book to learn the details.
Once you understand the zombie anatomy, it's time to review appropriate weaponry. Now this is another thing not to take lightly. Not all weapons will work in all situations. You have to consider surroundings, mode of transport, and the need to replenish supplies for the weapon you choose. With all this you also need to know how to use each weapon to properly terminate the zombies. Another thing to consider with weapon choice is zombie type.
My opinion of the book is probably obvious, I really enjoyed this book. The author imparts information with bits of humor. He knows his subject matter and definitely did his research. As I said, I was afraid this was just going to be a book telling me zombies are super great, but it was much more than that. I enjoyed the different aspects of zombies and zombie killing that he brought to the conversation.
Overall I would give this book a 4 out of 4. It was a well written book, but there were a few times I felt like I just had to put the nose to the grindstone to keep reading. That might be more of a reader issue than a writing issue. I must confess I am not much of a gamer or very interested in weapons. I will definitely recommend this book to friends and family.
