More often than not, differences in religious beliefs cause conflict within a marriage. Miranda J. Chivers explores the challenges faced by religious and non-religious spouses in her insightful book, Unequally Yoked. She also gives practical advice and encouragement to Christians who may be experiencing a divide in their relationship because their partner does not fully believe in Christ. Her book is separated into three parts. The first section deals with understanding an unequally yoked marriage, the second addresses the importance of a spiritual support system, and the third focuses on how unequally yoked couples can achieve a happy life at home. In addition to motivating Christians to continue building a relationship with Christ, Chivers also provides brief anecdotes detailing her marital experience with a partner who is not as committed to Christianity as she is.
Beliefs are a huge part of our individuality. It can be difficult to co-exist with someone who holds differing beliefs, especially in a long-term relationship. I think that this book highlights an important issue that is becoming more prevalent in our society. In my opinion, the author’s descriptions of the challenges faced in a relationship like this one are very accurate. As a Christian who struggled with dating an agnostic in the past, I deeply resonate with the relationship challenges that were expressed in this book.
I admire the author’s fearlessness to write about certain subjects like abuse. Additionally, she thoroughly explores taboo subjects and their role in a marriage, such as intimacy. She openly gives advice for achieving a fulfilling sex life despite religious differences. She also warns against friendships which can lead to infidelity. The touchy subject of co-parenting is also analyzed in this book. I appreciated Chivers’ bravery and bold candor when broaching these sensitive topics.
Another thing which I like about this book is that it emphasizes the importance of communication and compromise. While Chivers encourages Christian spouses to keep their faith alive, she does not belittle the beliefs of atheists and agnostics. Instead, she urges unequally yoked couples to cherish, love, and forgive each other. I agree with her theory that everyone is on a different spiritual level.
I do not dislike anything about this book. An added bonus to reading it is that it seems professionally edited. Honestly, finding errors in this book is challenging. In my opinion, this book is an excellent tool for Christian spouses who are in committed relationships with non-believers. Marital counselors will also benefit from reading this book. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars because it strongly resonated with me and I admired the ability of the author to bravely explore sensitive topics while respecting the viewpoints of non-religious people.
