It takes some measure of discipline, courage and personal sacrifice for a person to commit extraordinary acts, especially when they had hit a low point in life. In The Altitude Journals, David J. Mauro shares a story on how he summited the tallest peaks of the seven continents and was able to overcome the wrongs of his past, conquer his fears and the doubts he had about his physical abilities.

The actual motivation behind each person's decision to embark on life-threatening adventures such as mountain climbing differs. Most people climb mountains for the adrenaline rush while others do it to push their limits. For the author, the motivation that fueled his decision to climb mountains was the opportunity to conquer his internal challenges, repair his shattered life and regain his self-confidence. To share his experience with the reader is the reason he wrote this memoir.

At forty-four, the author's life had hit a low point. His breakup with his wife made him depressed, and he considered himself a failure at marriage like his father. He accepted an offer from his brother-in-law to join an expedition to the top of Denali, the highest peak in North America. He doubted his ability to make it to the top of the highest peak in North America but, the expedition felt like one good thing he could hold on to. Through his determination and the support of his teammates, he was able to achieve the summit. That achievement instilled in him a sense of accomplishment, made him believe in himself again and marked the start of his years as a mountaineer.

It was inspiring to read how the author will conquer fear by facing challenges. In The Altitude Journals, the author shares his personal experience with honesty, insight and a right amount of humour sprinkled in. This book is a page turner, its story flows and is written in a language that is easy and pleasant to read. The quality of this book coupled with the honesty of the author's account are the reasons this book compare well with other similar books.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because the author did an excellent literary work on this memoir. The account of his experience is honest, insightful and is written in a language that is easy and a pleasure to read. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy adventure stories and mountain climbing.
