With more and more occupations requiring advanced education, a college degree is critical to one's success in today's workforce. However, choosing a college can be very stressful. Making sure you make the right decision can often feel like a daunting task, especially for first-generation students (people that are the first in their immediate family to attend college). In First Generation Students Can Succeed (A Guide to Choosing and Navigating College), Dr. Jerald L. Henderson offers step by step instructions for first-generation students to follow when considering college as a route to success in life.
Seeing that the author has years of experience and expertise in academic development, student affairs, assessment, education evaluation research, curriculum design, and holistic approaches to improve student retention and completion rates enhanced my confidence in this book. The source of information in self-help books like this is always the first thing I look out for.
The author kicks off with one of the most important questions a student considering college should ask: What is the right fit for me? As simple as the question sounds, most students don't know the important factors to consider that will determine the right fit for them. Size of the institution, average class size of general course required, diversity, number of students who have graduated from a particular major and the institution, and educational programs and services offered by the institution are just a few of the many factors the author talks about. Dr. Henderson passes his message using a simple and unambiguous language, which makes it very easy to understand.
Furthermore, I liked that the author doesn't say which type of institutions are the best for students. He only offers the facts about the different types of institutions (two-year, four-year, public, and private), and he leaves the student to decide which one best suits them. Dr. Henderson's advice transcends what first-generation students have to consider before choosing a college. He also covers dealing with stress, study strategies, independence, and how to balance studying and working, which makes the content of this book apply to every student.
First Generation Students Can Succeed is professionally edited and well organized. It contained very few errors but none of them made my reading difficult at any point.
I really enjoyed reading First Generation Students Can Succeed. I wish I had gotten access to the information in this book before I entered college. It would definitely have made things easier for me in my college years, especially when it came to proper time management which a lot of college students tend to struggle with. I would recommend First Generation Students Can Succeed to high school and college students, parents, and guidance counselors. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars . There wasn't anything I disliked about the book.

You're welcome.kandscreeley wrote: ↑08 Nov 2018, 09:20 It's nice that there are guides like this out there for those who have no one else to give them this kind of information. I'm also glad that the author doesn't put his own bias into anything. Sounds like the perfect guide for someone considering college. Thanks.
