The Cult Next Door is a magnificent novel by Elizabeth R. Burchard and Judith L. Carlone. The novel represents the hard destiny of the main character, Elizabeth. It also shows the deep psychological trauma the lack of love and understanding causes. The main character will have to pass through numerous challenges to find her true self.

Elizabeth loses her father at an early age, and her mother remains her only relative. Unfortunately, their relationship is quite complicated, and this leaves a deep mark on Elizabeth’s entire life. The only other person who has shown some kind of sympathy for her, her fiance, dies in an absurd accident. Elizabeth’s life is destroyed. All her hopes are buried. She cannot see any reason to continue living.

Elizabeth’s need for love makes her an easy victim of the pseudo-psychiatrist George. He easily gains total control over the lives of Elizabeth and her mother. They help him recruit new members to his group. All group members are gradually deprived of their freedom. They do not dare to make any decisions without George’s approval. He has a total control over every aspect of their lives. The strangest thing is that all group members are well-educated people. However, their educational degree does not prevent them from becoming absolutely obedient to George’s will. He even makes them participate in some disgusting rituals, including sexual experiments.

This novel is extremely influential from a psychological point of view. It shows how one’s uncertainty in his own worth can easily turn this person into a victim. The most important moment for Elizabeth is her encounter with Judith. She is the one who helps Elizabeth gain confidence and see George’s true nature. Elizabeth is no more the obedient and easily manipulated creature. She turns into a young woman who is aware of her worth and is ready to fight for her freedom. Elizabeth’s change is simply striking.

I cannot think of any flaws in the book. It is really wonderful and worth reading.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 points because it is not only interesting but also educating. It shows that a person should never lose his or her self-esteem, as this may have fatal consequences for his or her life. I recommend this book to all people who have doubts concerning their own value. On the other hand, this book is not a good choice for those who prefer more action-packed stories.

The book is professionally edited, and I did not notice any typos.
