The Leading Man by Stephen J. Blakesley is a non-fiction book that seeks to help the reader learn how to be a great leader. The book was written and published in 2018. It is a short book that can be categorized as an educational book.
How can one become a great leader? This is the question that this book seeks to answer. There are six essential attributes of a great leader. These attributes can be developed in order to ensure that the reader becomes a great leader. The first attribute is "presence." It is summarized as consisting of gravitas(how you act), communication (how you speak), and appearance(how you look). The author explains these three points in order to help the reader better understand the term, "executive presence." The second essential attribute of a great leader is "vision." The author suggests that the reader should have a clear picture of where they start, what values and purpose they have, where their goal ends, how to get others to buy into this vision, what silver lining exists, and the wisdom to understand the path to reaching one's goal is a long journey. What are the other essential attributes of a great leader? Which of them is the main one? How should they be nurtured? All these questions will be answered in this amazing book.
The author expressed his ideas methodically. He started by describing what a "process" is. He then explained that, "leading depends greatly upon one's ability to influence others, and our ability to do that is determined by the presence we emit and our capacity to communicate a vision." The author went to great lengths to ensure the reader can understand the points he mentioned. I enjoyed how simple the book was and how easy it was to follow the author's points.
The book is a step-by-step menu on being a great leader. The author wrote the book to highlight six essential attributes of a great leader. These attributes are effective together, but the author also mentions that one of them is the main one. This made me question the order in which these attributes rank. It also made me eager to read the whole book in order to get a better understanding of why one attribute was viewed as the most important one.
I rated this book 4 out of 4 stars. This is because the author shared his message effectively with well-thought-out points. The entire book was structured perfectly, and I finished reading the book in one session. I only encountered one grammatical error in the entire book. Due to this, it did not factor into my rating.
I would recommend this book to fans of educational non-fiction books. The book was short and efficiently written. I could promise that any reader would take an hour to complete this book. I look forward to reading more of the author's works.
