Often, when I read a book of this kind, I wonder what makes the author qualified to give us the advice he does. So, I like to research him/her a bit. Rest assured, Stephen J. Blakesley is more than qualified. He is a successful writer with over 8 books published, an international speaker and trainer. He is also the Founder and Managing Partner at GMS Talent LP, a company that helps organizations or people become ultra-performant. As you can see, Stephen J. Blakesley has been around the motivational, leadership and mentoring scene for quite some time, giving him the authority in the field.
In The Leading Man, the author is trying to answer the question "What are the essential attributes of a successful leader?" There are so many definitions and theories of what a leader is ,that one might feel overwhelmed and confused. That's why the author proposes a simple definition: "The process of influencing followers to join in the pursuit of a commonly held objective". Starting from this definition, he clarifies the meaning of some important terms, such as: process, the ability to influence and followers.
The author theorizes that, in order to be a great leader you need these 6 essential skills: presence, visioning, communication, motivation, crediting, emotional intelligence. Chapter 1 gives a quick overview of the 6 skills. In the next 6 chapters they are being discussed at greater detail. Throughout the book, Stephen Blakesley underlines that self-awareness, knowing yourself, is important, but knowing others is equally as important. However, in order to know and improve others, you have to make certain "you are the best you can be". In order to achieve the best version of yourself, you must improve a little each and every single day.
The Leading Man is a quick read, as it is only 29 pages long, divided into 9 chapters. Even though it tackles an often heavy topic, the simple style makes it easy to understand. I loved the fact that the author gives examples from his own life to clarify certain ideas. Also, the few punctuation and syntax errors noticed do not hinder the reader in any way.
I would recommend this book to people who are just beginning their study of leadership and to those who simply want to polish and refresh their skills.
All in all, I found The Leading Man to be very easy to comprehend, but at the same time packed with useful information. For this reason I am going to give it 4 out of 4 stars.
