One of my greatest joys is travelling. I’ve been to Europe several times, but I have never had the pleasure of going to Malta. After reading The Ultimate Island by Amit Offir, I feel like I may have missed out on something wonderful. As the author recounts his visit to the island, the reader can’t help but be swept away with his love for the charming place in this lovely nonfiction travel guide.

In The Ultimate Island, the author starts out by telling his philosophy on life. He then relates a little of what made him choose going to Malta, as he is an avid traveler. As he journals his day-to-day experiences on the island of Malta, Offir informs the reader of some of the trivia and history about the place. It makes for a pleasant and informative reading experience. This isn’t a formal travel guide, just an enthusiastic recounting of a personal adventure.

I ended up giving The Ultimate Island 4 out of 4 stars. I very much enjoyed all the information the author had about Malta. There are lots of bits of trivia the author sprinkles throughout the book that make the reading experience more interesting. The author has also included lots of pictures from his trip which, while not professional, show some of the historic features and landmarks. Offir’s book is conversational and reads like a journal, making this an enjoyable book for anyone who likes travel memoirs. The author’s delight over the island permeates the writing, and you can’t help but become excited about Malta as well. Offir talks about not only the places you can visit on the island, but also about the people he met and food he ate. The book is a charming travelogue, and I’m hoping the author writes about some of his other travel experiences based on his enthusiasm.

My only complaint was that there were a number of grammar errors in the book. It wasn’t noticeable enough to detract from my reading, but the book could use a good polish to fix some missing commas. For those who are looking for a professional travel guide to Malta, this is also probably not your read of choice. This book reads like a journal rather than a book that tells you the best restaurants and nightclubs. I don’t feel like that hurts the book at all, but it might disappoint some looking for a more conventional travel guide.

All things considered, I greatly enjoyed The Ultimate Island. I hope the author continues on with his writing and travels, as he has a charming style. The writing is conversational and pleasant, and the information is interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to travel to Malta, or anyone who’d like to feel like they just did.
