Malta: The Ultimate Island by Amit Offir is a travel book with a little extra added. The about the author section is a nice overview of Offir’s past works in self-help literature and speaking engagements. These writings give an insight into how the author experiences travel and gets the most out of his vacations. If a book could be a self-help manual and a travel guide in one, this book would be it.
People who are planning a vacation to Malta would utilize this for an additional book for sights to see, or maybe avoid. I am thinking of the MTV concert for a specific example. Some people would steer far clear of this gathering and this would be pertinent information for them. The book is really more of a travel memoir, and not really a travel guide, so using this book as the only resource for travel planning would not be as helpful. The author writes of iconic places to visit, like the Blue Lagoon, but does not expound on the best times to go, if there are any entrance fees et cetera. People who are looking to this book solely as a travel guide would be very disappointed.
Travelers who have not planned their next vacation yet and are looking to read up on an area that might be of interest for them would find this book very helpful. Offir’s descriptions of the welcoming atmosphere, gorgeous weather and delicious food made me want to start planning a trip to Malta myself. What is also very interesting in this book is Offir’s background in self-help speaking. This leads to a book that tells how to get the most out of a vacation and even take new ideas that are experienced on vacation and translate them into the working world.
There were only a few drawbacks to this title. One of the major ones were the lack of captions on the breathtaking pictures in the book. Visually, the photographs were stunning, but I did not know what I was looking at to associate the descriptions in the previous chapter with the pictures placed at the end. This was an exceptionally well edited book. I did not flag any spelling or grammar mistakes.
Overall, I would give Malta: The Ultimate Island by Amit Offir 4 out of 4 stars. This was more of a memoir about a trip, than an actual travel guide, but the writing made me want to start planning my own trip. The pictures could have been placed in the text while the areas were being talked about, or had added captions, but those are very small errors. This is a very nice piece of travel writing.
