This is actually different to racism, which is when other people don't allow you to fit in for your skin colour.
Since she was black but with different coloured eyes it seems she was not identifying with a particular race but was a person

I got the same impression. It's as if the author had just played the subject out of social pressure and didn't even bother to develop it further. Anyway, I don't think this is a theme that should be developed in every possible book.
