I agree with Suzer6440 xyz that a surprising ending means that there is scope for the next book to develop the issues further and answer the questions that the readers are left with.

I agree with you that the change of the predators was so sudden however, it gave this some kind of suspenseful end. I am looking forward to book 2.

This sudden shift in direction felt a little too much Deus ex machina for me, honestly. I don't believe a good enough reason for them to suddenly sacrifice themselves for Rion was given to explain this change of heart.
