I believe his amnesia was real but more as a result of his mental state and failures than of the accident he was involved in.

I think it was fake. John was using the amnesia to cover up for his failures

I think John’s amnesia was caused from a mental illness and not from his accident. He was stressed about building the new building that it caused him stress.

I agree with this. Considering his situation, it's very likely that his amnesia is caused by his psychological condition rather than the accident.

100% it was real .he could have used it as an excuse but as the description suggest he didn't and that's what makes me think it was real

I think it was real. Yes, he could have used it to hide his failures, but from whom? The interested people did remember everything. His brain probably tried to protect him since he was under great stress.

Early on in the novel I started to suspect John had a mental illness. The ending made me truly believe that John is indeed suffering from something. I think his amnesia was genuine but maybe due to his own want to not remember.

For me, I think his amnesia is real. I mean, why would John fake his amnesia? And it's not that easy to pretend that you have amnesia.

An amnesia can't be fake if he definitely did not remember anything at all.

I believe the amnesia was real, but it most likely was not a result of the accident but rather due to being unable to handle the truth.

For me, it was quite evident that John's amnesia was real because a series of of mental issues connected to his personal problems followed after his accident. All factors overwhelmed him and since his brain could not take up that load it went into amnesia.
life is only knowing the unknown, we can do this by reading books easily- Online book club is a great place for this. This is what I believe.

I think john’s amnesia was real despite his behavior at the end of the book. But now that you mentioned it, I can see reason why he could have faked it. It’s possible it was fake but I strongly believe john have mental issues that probably emanated from his accident or just manifested or worsened after the accident.

To be honest, I haven't read the entire book and am only around Chapter 7 (the middle of the book). However, right now I can sense that John is in no way faking it. I think the fact that he really couldn't remember any of the events in the past three years of his life shows how genuine his amnesia is.

I'm also thinking of this theory at the moment. John has always mentioned how he felt there has always been darkness in him and that he does not feel this only because he is an amnesiac. I believe this darkness is symbolic of how he coped with his problems and how his mental health is suffering as consequence to his mismanagement of emotions, feelings, etc.

I guess I never really considered that it might be fake. He seemed to have so many problems getting along and to me it was genuine. Anyway, wouldn’t he have had trouble keeping all of his problems straight. Surely he wouldn’t have been such a good “actor “.
