I believe that was done on purpose by the author. It was clear to John that he could read it. This is how he reasoned that three and a half years had passed since the vehicle accident.

I was confused by it initially then ignored every subsequent occurrence. Only now do I realize it may have been necessary for John to ascertain the amount of time that had passed.

I presume, it's for the readers. The author must have did it to let the readers imagine the whole setting.
