It didn't seem compelled to me. They simply followed the wind. However, I believe I am still undecided about James' version of the story. That's the only thing I am unsure about.

It did not seem forced to me. They knew each other from a young age and spent significant amount of time together. They were even friends initially as well.

I enjoyed seeing the relationship between James and Lily growing. I appreciated how he accepted her from the time she arrived on the farm and the friendship that they were able to maintain. It was heartbreaking when he left and left her alone but I appreciate it his stamina and getting her to William so that her musical talents could be enhanced. I was really shocked at the ending and the book and cannot wait to read the second one

Well, I guess James and Lily could have gotten to know each other better to help things. Also, peer pressure is a powerful thing, and I wonder how much time James can resist it.

I have read the entire series. The first book does seem to portray James as weak enough to betray Lily to save his own skin. William's sincerity was more realistic in regards to Lily's welfare. I could completely understand Lily lacking trust in James after he left for school. He turned on her as a child so it was reasonable to believe he would do so as an adult.

I don't consider any relatioship between a male a female inappropriate unless ne of them is a minor or are related, with that said, you also cna't force a relation on a couple it's either they are attracted to each other or have ulterior motives, in this case I think they do like each other, they were just put in a difficult situation due to their state and society

In my opinion, the relationship between Lily and James was a little forced. I expected it to be more pure and balanced. Although, it was interesting to read about their relationship and see how it grows. I would say that I enjoyed reading the book overall. I would rate it 3 out of 4 stars.

Sheilaread wrote: 01 Jan 2022, 21:37 I also agree with others. I like where their relationship is trying to go. I liked how they start out as friends when they were little, but now, I feel she is much more in love than he is at this time. Maybe she is a bit more mature? Maybe he needs to mature mentally a little? I guess if there are more books, maybe we will see these too again. But for now, i’m not sure their love will last forever. I don’t feel it’s very forced though.
I agree that their relationship was cute when they were little. However, it seems that James didn't care as much about Lily as Lily did about him when they grew up. I really hope that we will get to read about Lily and James in the future books.

I love the historical romance scene the author included. I liked James unconventional attraction for Lily. However, I felt the romances scene was forced.

Well, attraction can happen between two people but love and sincerity cannot bud alone from other person's attractiveness. I believe that if James' character could have been portrayed as more sincere to Lily, then I would have rooted for their relationship.

In theory, a romantic relationship between a slave and a master (or the master's son) might seem ugly and fake. Does the slave really want this relationship? Is she not afraid of her master (or his son)? Is she trying to improve her position thanks to this relationship?

However, the relationship between Lily and James in this book looks quite natural to me. It seems that they really liked each other.

I believe more would be unraveled about their personalities and relationship in the second sequel, and we will be able to see if James would remain by her side in her fight for liberty and the difficult time that they live in, but I do not think their relationship was forced.

For now, it seems sincere and "appropriate". It's rather mutual. Can't say how long it'll last, but we should cut James some slack.

Forced, definitely forced. I don't know how else to say it. Its difficult to say how James would react if things failed to work for his benefit.

I honestly cannot give a straight answer to this. Though I am convinced that James truly loves and cares for lily, I don't know if this love will be able to stand the test of time. James could betray her in a twinkle of an eye when things don't go well for him.
