I think James was indecisive about his his principles. He was torn between pleasing his father and betraying his heart. I think he couldn't stomach the fact that his father didn't deserve winning all the time, especially if that affected James on the long run.

It was definitely affected by the code of society at the time. James faced serious jail time if they were caught, and Lily could have been sentenced to death for what was happening. You could feel the anguish and longing through the writing. Once they were comfortable with the people around them, they did show their affections more in public settings. However, they took great risks in doing so outwardly.
