I don't think James actually cared about Lily. I assume his sentiments for her were purely master-slave in nature and will not survive the test of time.

I share the same thoughts. I didn't like how it was executed and it wasn't a wise decision to make it a romantic relationship. It should have been left as a platonic relationship.

Everyone seems to believe James can betray Lily, so why don't we hear all sides of the story? Society drives James to betray her, even if he is honest. We must trust him and hope for the best.

Even though some parts of their relationship are portrayed as healthy and loving, how the abusive part of their relationship was executed doesn't sit well. It may as well be emotionally draining. I loved reading the book though.

James didn't force anything on Lily. The feeling was mutual. Lily at first thought James intentions was bad. She soon understood why James did whatever he did.

The relationship between James and Lily is not out of the ordinary. Two free spirits becoming friends and it transforming into a relationship that was yet to be defined in the story. Yes they had some amorous moments together but it does not speak much. James, perhaps is yet to mature more in thinking but Lily trying to find more love from James, places hers as someone who is more interested in the relationship. Can we say is indifferent but the toga of friendship still binds them together? I hope he does not betray her when least expected.

I think it was romantic. The feelings were mutual.
